No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
